It is a question we hear from new customers all the time: "I already have a purifier at home. Why would I order water?" It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends. Here is how the two compare.
Home RO purifier
The good: water is ready at the tap, and the running cost per litre can be low if the unit is working well.
The catch: filters, membranes and UV lamps need replacing, usually once or twice a year, and the unit needs a service visit. Many home units also waste a lot of water, sometimes two or three litres for every litre they purify. If servicing slips, the water quality slips too, and you may not notice.
Delivered RO water
The good: no equipment to buy, no servicing, no waste water at your home. You get sealed water that has been treated and tested at a plant, in sizes that suit you.
The catch: you need space to store jars, and someone to lift them onto a dispenser. If you forget to reorder, you can run out, although a subscription solves that.
A quick comparison
- Upfront cost: purifier needs an investment; delivered water needs none.
- Upkeep: a purifier needs regular servicing; delivered water needs none.
- Convenience: a purifier gives instant water; delivered water needs a dispenser or camper.
- Water wasted at home: purifier yes; delivered water none.
- Power cuts and low pressure: a purifier can be affected; delivered water is not.
Many families use both
A common set-up in Jaipur is a home purifier for everyday cooking, with delivered jars for drinking, guests and times when the purifier is being serviced. Others skip the purifier entirely and rely on jars and campers. Neither is wrong.
How to decide
- Work out how much drinking water your household really uses.
- Add up the yearly cost of servicing and filters for your purifier.
- Compare that with the monthly cost of delivered water for the same volume.
- Think about how reliably you will service the machine.
