If you live in Jaipur, you probably know the look of a steel tap after a few weeks of borewell water: crusty white marks that do not wipe off easily. The same minerals that mark your taps are the ones you taste in the glass.
Why the water is like this
Rajasthan is a dry state, and much of its groundwater sits in rock and soil that is rich in salts. Rainfall is low, so there is little fresh water to dilute them. In many areas the water is high in dissolved solids, and in some places it also carries fluoride or nitrate above comfortable levels. The picture varies from colony to colony, which is why one neighbour's water can taste quite different from the next.
What hard water does at home
- Leaves white scale on taps, geysers and kettles.
- Makes tea and dal taste slightly off.
- Shortens the life of water-using appliances.
- Leaves skin and hair feeling dry for some people.
Why boiling does not solve it
Boiling kills germs, but it does not remove dissolved salts. If anything, boiling concentrates them as water evaporates. A simple kitchen sieve or cloth filter will not help either, because dissolved salts pass straight through.
What reverse osmosis changes
An RO membrane pushes water through pores so small that most dissolved salts and many contaminants are left behind. The result tastes cleaner and lighter. Carbon filtration takes out chlorine and odour, and UV treatment guards against microbes. We then restore a small, balanced level of minerals so the water does not taste flat. You can read how this works in our step by step guide.
What RO does not change
RO makes drinking water better. It does not soften the water you use for bathing or washing clothes. If hard water is damaging your geyser or washing machine, a separate softener is the right fix.
The easy way to get the benefit
You do not have to install and maintain a purifier to drink better water. Many families in Jaipur simply order RO water in jars or campers, keeping the borewell for everything else. If that sounds useful, see our pack sizes or set up a regular delivery.
